PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will conduct its very first 'Ops Jalan' during the long year-end holidays to help reduce fatalities on the road.

Its enforcement director Datuk V. Valluvan Veloo said the ops will be conducted from Saturday (Dec 24) till Monday (Dec 26), and on Dec 30 to Jan 2, 2017.

Valluvan said RTD usually conducts operations during festive seasons such as Hari Raya and Chinese New Year.

However, this time around, it plans to carry out continuous operations during every long holiday period.

"The Transport Minister (Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai) wants enforcement activities to be conducted in a holistic manner especially during long holiday periods," he said in a press conference on Thursday.

Valluvan also said there will be no road blocks conducted but those found flouting the law will be stopped and issued compounds.

He said RTD enforcement officers together with those from other enforcement agencies will be patrolling highways and main cities.

"We will issue the maximum compound of RM300 and it will not be reduced.

"So when you get caught, do not try to negotiate," he added.

Valluvan hoped that with the Ops Jalan, the number of road accidents and fatalities will be reduced.

He said this year alone, there has been an average of 19 deaths daily due to road accidents.
