JOHOR BARU: The Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) will not take any chances with the tonto menace as it monitors the activity in a joint operation with the police.

State JPJ director Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said, fortunately, the tonto issue in Johor was well under control as the department had yet to receive reports of officers being threaten by tonto.

While it was not against the law to tailgate a vehicle, obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties was an offence, Mohd Rusdi said.

“We have been constantly monitoring and conducting integrated operations with police,” he told reporters during a press conference here yesterday.

Mohd Rusdi said he did not want his officers to suffer the same fate as the senior female Customs officer in Kelantan who was killed after her car was rammed by a tonto on Friday.

It was reported that Anisah Ali, 54, died at 11.15pm on Saturday due to internal injuries and intestinal complication.

She was reportedly on duty with two male colleagues when the tonto’s car rammed the back of their vehicle, which caused it to skid and hit a tree.
