EAIC teliti penahanan Siti Kasim

PUTRAJAYA: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) will look into the arrest of lawyer activist Siti Zabedah Kasim or better known as Siti Kasim yesterday, to determine whether the police has followed the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in effecting the arrest.

In a statement, EAIC Chairman Datuk A. Aziz A. Rahim said the agency viewed with grave concern upon the allegation of police impropriety and the misuse of power pursuing the arrest of Siti Kasim

“EAIC will be looking into the matter… whether there is any truth in the allegation of police impropriety in carrying out their duty and function.

“This is in line with the provision in section 28 of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission 2009 [Act 700] whereby the Commission may commence its own investigation since the matter is of significant interest to the public,” he said.

Siti Kasim was detained at the Kajang district police headquarters at 12.40am yesterday for allegedly obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties following a police report lodged by a woman claiming the lawyer has kidnapped her 24-year-old daughter on Thursday.

She was alleged to have abducted the woman, who is also her client, while she was undergoing a psychiatric examination at the Kajang Hospital and was later rescued by the police at a condominium unit in Segambut on Saturday night.

However, the police released Siti Kasim after the Kajang Magistrate’s Court rejected the police application for her remand.

KUALA LUMPUR: Not all of the 1.5 million Bangladeshi workers set to leave their countries to work overseas are headed for Malaysia, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said the figure of 1.5 million is a reference previously made by him to the number of Bangladeshis who had registered with their government to work overseas, not only in Malaysia.

"I would like to stress that the intake of Bangladeshis to Malaysia will depend on the need of employers when applications are made.

"There is no company or agent appointed to bring any Bangladeshi to the country," he said.

Zahid added that close monitoring through biometric and national security systems of arriving foreign workers is in force at every entry point to the country.

Zahid said this in reply to a question from Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PKR-Permatang Pauh) on the status of the E-card programme; and a request for detailed information on the companies appointed to bring in 1.5 million Bangladeshi workers into the country, including information on company heads and shareholders.
