EAIC to probe whether police followed SOP in Siti Kasims arrest

PUTRAJAYA: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) has viewed with grave concern allegations of police impropriety and misuse of power in the recent arrest of lawyer-activist Siti Kasim on Sunday (June 24).

The EAIC said it would look into the matter to determine whether the police had followed the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in effecting the arrest.

“This is in line with the provision in Section 28 of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission 2009 [Act 700], whereby the Commission may commence its own investigation since the matter is of significant interest to the public,” it said in a statement today.

It was reported that Siti Kasim was detained at the Kajang district police headquarters at 12.40am on Sunday for allegedly obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties following a police report lodged by a woman claiming that the lawyer had abducted her 24-year-old daughter on Thursday.

Siti Kasim was alleged to have abducted the woman, who is also her client, while she was undergoing psychiatric examination at the Kajang Hospital and was later rescued by the police at a condominium unit in Segambut.

Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yusoff was quoted as saying that police would investigate the lawyer-activist case under Section 363 and 186 of the Penal Code for abduction and obstructing a civil servant from discharging his duties.
