PETALING JAYA: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) will look into the recent arrest of lawyer-activist Siti Kasim to determine whether the police followed the standard operating procedure (SOP).

Its chairman Datuk A. Aziz A. Rahim said the EAIC views the allegations of police impropriety and the misuse of power leading to the arrest with grave concern.

He said in a statement that this was in line with the provisions under Section 28 of the EAIC Act 2009, whereby the commission may commence its own investigation as the matter is of significant interest to the public.

On Saturday night, Siti was arrested by the police for helping her client escape the clutches of her mother.

She was arrested after police barged into her house and detained the woman.

In a viral video, a police officer was seen explaining to Siti that the arrest was made under Section 363 of the Penal Code for kidnapping and Section 186 for obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties.

The police tried to apply for a four-day remand order on Sunday (June 24), but it was rejected by the magistrate's court.

Her arrest has drawn much criticism from both lawyers and activists.
